    Comparing Eurorack modular and standalone effects processors: flexibility, cost, portability, and what happens when a standalone unit thinks like a module.

    Two Philosophies, One Goal

    Eurorack and standalone effects processors both exist to shape sound. But they come at the problem from opposite directions. Eurorack gives you raw components - oscillators, filters, envelopes, VCAs - and lets you wire them into whatever you need. Standalone units give you a complete instrument in a box, ready to go.

    Neither is better. They solve different problems. But the interesting question is: what happens when a standalone unit borrows the best ideas from modular?

    The Case for Eurorack

    Eurorack is unmatched in flexibility. You choose every module, every connection, every signal path. Want a pitch-tracking envelope follower feeding a granular delay? Patch it. Want to modulate your reverb's decay time with an LFO synced to a clock divider? Three cables and you're there.

    The tradeoff is real: cost adds up fast (a serious rack easily exceeds €2,000–5,000), setup time is non-trivial, and gigging with a modular system requires serious planning. Power supplies, case space, cable management, and the eternal temptation of "just one more module" are part of the deal.

    The Case for Standalone

    Standalone effects processors trade modularity for immediacy. Power on, plug in, play. No patching, no menu-diving through module configurations. The best standalone units have a focused identity - they do specific things exceptionally well.

    The limitation is the flip side of that focus: you get what the manufacturer designed. The signal path is fixed. The effects are predetermined. When you hit the edge of what the unit can do, that's it.

    The Third Option: Modular Thinking in a Standalone Format

Dubby becomes a module in your rack without taking up HP.

    Go traditional standalone if: you want a plug-and-play experience with curated effects and don't need to customize beyond what the manufacturer provides.

    Go Dubby if: you want the creative freedom of modular - swappable effects, CV integration, quad routing, open-platform algorithms - in a portable, affordable, stage-ready format. Or if you already have a rack and want a powerful effects processor that speaks its language.

    The Bigger Picture

    The Eurorack vs standalone debate is really about how much agency you want over your sound. Eurorack gives you maximum agency at maximum cost.
